In December of 1945, just as World War II came to an end, Osvaldo Toro, Miguel Ferrer-Rincon and Luis Torregrosa-Casellas founded the architectural and engineering firm of Toro Ferrer and Torregrosa. The firmÕs privileged place in Puerto Rican architecture and urbanism was secured from the moment that they took the principles of the Modern Movement and adapted them to the tropical conditions of the Island. In commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of Toro Ferrer and Torregrosa, the Architecture and Construction Archives at the University of Puerto Rico (AACUPR) has organized an exhibition of four projects done by the firm from 1945 to 1955. The works chosen received extensive praise and coverage in the media in Puerto Rico and abroad.

The Caribe Hilton Hotel, the Legislative Office Building, the House for Guillermo Rodríguez and the Supreme Court Building illuminate an exceptional architectural and cultural construct developed in the midst of profound social transformations generated by an aggressive modernization of the Island.

Even though today the four buildings show the effects of time and continuous use, we hope that the memory of their beginnings rescue the avante-garde nature of the projects, and that this exhibition may help in recreating, in some important measure, the intense debate that these designs generated.
