By Beatriz del Cueto with A.G. Pantel and Roberto García
Conservation Methodology for Historic Buildings in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands is a comprehensive manual designed to facilitate sound conservation practices for 16th-century through early 20th-century buildings in the region. The manual covers a broad range of historic structures and building types, including sugar and coffee plantations, military structures, lighthouses as well as civic and residential architecture
The result of a two-year effort, the project details traditional construction techniques for wood, masonry, brick, timber, metal and reinforced concrete structures from these periods. The manual is intended for design professionals, students, conservators as well as owners and managers of buildings. The project team researched construction manuals and publications, documented existing buildings details and consulted extensively with professional conservators, architects, engineers, builders, archaeologists, geologists and historians.Traditional building materials and procedures were documented, identified and examined to produce basic and specific recomendations for conservation procedures.
Conservation Methodology for Historic Buildings in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands received a citation at the 1988 Architecture Magazine Annual Awards for Architectural Research
